Add the red wine in a large saucepan and bring to a boil.
Lower the heat and add the cinnamon sticks, lemon zest, ground cloves and Cointreau and simmer gently for 5 minutes
Add the pears and sugar. Put the lid on the pan and simmer on low heat for one hour, boil gently until the pears are soft.
Carefully remove the pears and place them on a serving dish.
Sift the remaining wine mixture and put it back into the pan. Bring to a boil over high heat and reduce to syrup.
Pour the red wine syrup over the pears.
