Description portrait paintings

The portrait paintings were part of the legacy of Maartje Aukes van der Meij. With her death, [P325] Trijntje van der Meij acquired both paintings and these went with her to England. Trijntje van der Meij passed away in June 2000. The paintings are now in the possession of her daughter [P2492] Ingrid Dalley living in Canterbury.

On 07-08-2017 first contact with Anske David Bax, son of [P2492] Ingrid Dalley, grandson of [P325] Trijntje van der Meij.

Description baptisms

Before 1811, baptisms and births were recorded in the ecclesiastical register. Earlier, only baptism and usually only the father was mentioned. Fortunately, we have found the following baptismal registers of Lourens van der Meij and Janna Jans.

Description marriage

Auke Lourens van der Mei, as his marriage certificate mentions his family name, marries on 8 June 1816 at the age of 27 at Berlikum. The Sheriff functions as Officer of the Civil Registry. Auke Lourens is a carpenter, last living in St. Annaparochie and born in Wier. His parents are both deceased.

Janna Jans Posthuma as her marriage certificate mentions her family name is a maid in Berlikum. She did not remember the death of her parents because she mentioned about 1791.

According to the law in force at the time, they had to announce their intended marriage at least twice (on a Sunday), at the same time before the town hall in Berlikum and St. Annaparochie, which dates were recorded in the marriage certificate.

In an advertisement in the Leeuwarder courant of 15/12/1820, four years in their wedding, Auke Lourens offers his house (#68) with four rooms from 12/05/1821 to rent. We must assume here they found shelter elsewhere.

Description of life events

Auke Lourens: Master carpenter and wood saw miller in Berlikum. He married Janna (Jans) Posthuma (1787-1853) in 1816, who was orphaned at the age of 3 and raised by Rev. Gerard van der Tuuk. Because of this Gerhard came as a first name in the van der Meij family. Only in Berlikum the Frisian corruption "Grats" or "Graddus" was used.

Janna Jans: Her surname was Postumus van Leijen, foster daughter of Ds van der Tuuk. Her foster mother was Liefke Klaassen van Leyen.

On 13/10/1817 he sells a house in Wier which he owns together with his sister Trijntje Laurens for an amount of fl. 1100. This house is probably from their parents who died in 1789 and 1812.

On 17-12-1821 he borrows a sum of fl. 360 to Seerp Tijssen Ringnalda living in Wier which was recorded in a bond with the notary Jan Everhardus van Loon, office at St. Annaparochie.

An inventor? In an advertisement in the Leeuwarder courant from 04-10-1833 Auke Lourens reports a raffle in the corn fair in Leeuwarden of twenty improved fans suitable for cleaning corn.

On 28-01-1833 he buys a house with loft and "bleekje" in Wier for the small amount of fl. 55. (a bleekje is a lawn at the house.) Every house had a bleekje to dry the laundry on the grass.

On 03-05-1841 Auke Lourens is mentioned as debtor together with 21 others in a cancellation deed against the heirs Sijbe Klazes Osinga concerning the sale on 9 November 1839 of the farm Schellingwou as mentioned above.
